Moodle – Introduction Videos

I needed a couple of video clips to use as a way of explaining to various education and administration leaders just what Moodle is.  After a bit of a hunt around on the web I came across these two videos which I liked.

Installing OS X 10.4 Tiger without DVD

So I had some eMacs given to me, 1GHz PowerPC based, 512MB RAM with only a CD drive installed.  None of the eMacs were operating as the drives had been erased by the guy who gave them to me. The only install disk I had was a DVD of Tiger OSX 10.4 and also iLife ’06 on DVD.

Available to me was a Macbook Pro (Intel) running Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6.6), an external hard drive with Firewire and USB connectivity, eMacs (PowerPC) with CD drive only.  After getting one eMac setup the plan was to use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy the completed, updated eMac disk image to all the other eMacs.

The problem I had to solve was getting the eMacs with only the CD drive, setup on OS X Tiger 10.4. I read plenty of websites with options for creating install drives on iPods and DVD disks and external hard drives. I tried USB sticks, iPod installs with no success – eMac just wouldnt find the disk image, and couldnt boot in Target mode because Macbook Pro didnt have same Firewire connector as eMac. The solution that did work for me is outlined below.

  1. Create a disk image of the Apple OSX 10.4 Tiger install disk
    1. Insert OSX 10.4 Tiger install disk into the Macbook
    2. Open “Disk Utility” (in Applications>Utilities)
    3. Select the Mac OS X Install DVD title from the left menu, then choose New Image from the menu barScreen shot 2011 03 13 at 10.40.06 AM 300x197 Installing OS X 10.4 Tiger without DVD
    4. Before saving, change the Image Format to “read only” then save on Desktop
    5. when finished creating, select the listed “Mac OS X Install DVD.dmg” in the Disk Utility left frame and from the menu bar run “Images>Scan Image for Restore
  2. Prepare the Harddrive
    1. The harddrive I used was formatted as a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) drive and I wanted to create a partition on it just for the OS install disk)
    2. The Macbook Pro didnt have the Firewire connection same as the eMac, so I connected using USB cable (the drive enclosure has both options)
    3. In Disk Utility select the external hard drive, then select Partition
    4. I changed mine to have 2 partitions, one 10GB the other 180GB
    5. I called the 10GB Partition “Mac OS X 10.4 Install”
    6. Click Apply, it erased the drive and created the Partitions
  3. Creating the Bootable image on the Hard drive
    1. Now using Disk Utility (still on the Macbook Pro) I selected the 10 GB External Hard drive Partition ”Mac OS X 10.4 Install” and clicked Restore
    2. Source – drag the dmg file (see 1.5 above, ”Mac OS X Install DVD.dmg”) into the Source field.
    3. Destination – drag the 10GB external hard drive partition here
    4. click Restore, wait till complete
  4. Installing onto eMac using Firewire drive
    1. connect the external drive to the eMac using the firewire cable
    2. turn on the eMac while holding down the “Option” key on the keyboard
    3. On the screen will be the icon for the Mac OS X Install DVD, make sure this is selected (it’ll appear depressed) then click the arrow button
    4. Follow the installation steps from the installer.
  5. Updating OS X 10.4 to OS X 10.4.11 (last version)
    1. Its possible to download a combo update from Apple that updates OS X 10.4 to the final version, 10.4.11.  This update is here: Apple combo update PowerPC 10.4.11
    2. note – after Id installed this there were still updates to Java (and some other apps which I downloaded once the eMac had a working internet connection)
  6. Internet Software Updates
    1. Once everything was installed I connected to the internet (using ethernet to my router) and updated the software using Software Update (from Apple icon menu on top menu bar).
    2. By choosing Install and Save, the updates will be available to access for any other machines rather than download them each again – [saved in Library/Packages]

Peter Higham (MAF Learning Technologies Arnhem Land) sent me a link to GCF LearnFree Office tutorials. They have a great site with resources for Office – 2010 back to 2003 AND XP……….but thats not all!

There are topics covering:

  • Office – Powerpoint, Word, Excel, Access, Publisher, Outlook
  • Computers – setup a computer, Internet, Facebook, Windows
  • OpenOffice – a free alternative to Microsoft Office
  • Everyday life – banking help, organisation skills

Technology

What do we think of when hearing the word technology?

I think I heard the term best described as “stuff that has been invented in my lifetime”.  For me I grew up with television, it was no big deal.  But getting a colour TV was massive.  It arrived the week that the Olympic games in Montreal began.  I still remember the opening ceremony.  I remember my last year of high school the school bought a video recorder – a huge device capable of recording things off tv.

For my kids who have grown up with these things…………………….and, internet, mobile phones, mobile internet, digital video, pens that record video etc etc I am interested in the things they will call technology.

Technology is really anything that we use to get something done.  God used the technology of some stone tablets to communicate some laws to man. The apostle Paul used the technology of letters when he wrote to the churches he visited and couldnt return in person to.  Neil Armstrong used the technology of video and long distance comms to transmit tv pictures of man stepping on the moon’s surface for the first time.

A man was carried for three days on the stretcher in the photo below to reach a remote airstrip in Papua New Guinea.  While most likely not the most comfortable three days he’s ever had I guarantee he was thankful for the technology of that stretcher.  Was he aware of the radio technology used to communicate with the MAF aircraft?  How much did he appreciate the technology of the aircraft itself?  The technology used by doctors in treating him?

HCSB Online Study Bible

Came across this today – and while it’s still in beta it looks to have good potential.  Many of the features that users will expect are not live yet (Search, Notes, Articles) but hey that’s what Beta is right?   Give it a go and maybe suggest features/inclusions to Lifeway – using the Feedback form link in the sites footer.  Lifeway are the folks behind ‘Bible Navigator X‘ the XBox360 Bible.
